Yellow-rumped Warbler The arrival of yellow-rumped warblers signals the beginning of a shift in the composition of Stanley Park's bird population. Yellow-rumped warblers are amongst the first of spring's songbird migrants, and warblers in particular, whose arrival brightens Stanley Park's forest, woodland, and riparian songbird habitats. This sighting ( March 24, 2007 ) is my first warbler sighting of the 2007 season and a welcome addition to the records being kept on Stanley Park's songbird migration chronology.
The male yellow-rumped warber in this photograph was hawking flying insects along Ceperley Creek. This adult male, even though it's in its bright breeding plumage, might have remained hidden amongst the shrubs and tree branches but for its habit of flying out from a perch to capture insects in flight. Several delightful song phrases also drew attention to its presence. The day was cold, windy, and made even less a day for birdwatching by heavy rain. A quick check of the range map for this species in the Sibley Guide to Birds showed that this bird might not have traveled far, since this species is shown as wintering from just north of our area and south along the coast to southern California.
