Bracken During the summer months the rich green fronds of Bracken blend with the foliage of surrounding shrubs and herbs. The sudden arrival of cool fall days turns the fronds to gold. This is the time the life energy of the plant is safely stored in thick underground stems. Retreating below ground is a strategy adopted by many perennial plant for surviving winter's freezing cold.
