Dark-eyed Junco
Juncos return in numbers to Stanley Park starting in late September. When the first snow appears on our local mountains the junco population in Stanley Park climbs. From early to mid November it is not uncommon to encounter flocks of 20-40 birds as they actively search for food.

Juncos are ground gleaners. They use their short, thick bill to pick-up and crush small seeds.

Males like this one have a dark, almost black, hood. Females have a greyer hood only slightly darker than the feathers of the upper part of the body.

Juncos prefer semi-open areas with protective, brushy cover, nearby. Favoured sites in Stanley Park include the small woodland area along Lost Lagoon's southwest shore, Ceperley Meadow and the old reservoir site converted to a 'meadow' that lies just to the south of the Prospect Point Picnic Area.
