Identification  
Male:
White crescent on face
May show a purplish irridescence on head
Dark back with dark projection onto white sides 
Female:
Gray-brown body
Brown head with a mostly orange bill

Male and females have yellow eyes hence the name goldeneye.

Habitat: Foreshore
Winter along rocky shorelines. Large flocks seen in Stanley Park from Brockton Point west past Lion's Gate Bridge.

Feeding:
Surface Diver
Feeds mostly on molluscs. Also eats crustaceans.
Can stay submerged for over 50 seconds.

Behaviour:
Pair bond often lasts for more than one year.
Barrow's Goldeneye pairs are spread evenly along the shore of English Bay wherever suitable food is found. Pairs defend their winter feeding grounds.
Often stay on water rather than take flight when frightened.
