Large white patch on a large head
Head may show purple-green irridescene
White breast and flanks 
Female:
Large dark head with white cheek patch

Habitat: Freshwater
Long-term pair bonding. Bufflehead tend to return to previous wintering and breeding territories.

Feeding:
Surface Diver
Feeds on freshwater insects and marine invertebrates and fish.
When feeding in small groups a sentry usually remains on the surface.

Behaviour:
Courtship behaviour increases from mid Februrary through March. Watch for a group of males around a female. Listen for the distinctive call made by the males.
