Identification  
Male:
Body with sides red-brown to rear. Head, breast and back with striking white markings. 
Female:
Dark brown body with 2-3 white spots on head.
A circular spot behind the eye 
Quick Check
Watch for lively dark-bodied sea ducks bobbing to surface after a dive. Small groups of birds rest on large boulders surrounded by water.

Habitat: Foreshore
Prefer rocky shores and occupy a zone from 10m - 100m offshore. Use small islets and isolated boulders as resting areas. Comfortable in surf. These birds pop to the surface almost bouncing out of the water after a dive.

Feeding:
Surface Diver
Feeds on invertebrates - molluscs, crustaceans and small fish.

Behaviour:
Usually seen in pairs or small mixed groups. Wary of people not allowing an approach closer than 20-30m.
