System Features:
The system uses nested units based on landform and does not reflect changes in altitude. Used by: Ministry of Environment, Lands and Parks
Major Division of the Ecoregion System include:
  • Ecodomain - global scale
  • Ecoprovince - continental scale
  • Ecoregion - regional level
  • Ecosection - local

A total of 10 ecoprovinces are recognized within British Columbia.
Ecoprovinces found within the area include:
  • Windward Island Mountains
  • Leeward Island Mountains
  • Nanaimo Lowlands
  • Straight of Georgia
  • Georgia Lowlands
  • Fraser River Lowlands
  • Norhwest Cascade Ranges
  • Northern Pacific Ranges
  • Southern Pacific Ranges
  • Eastern Pacific Ranges

British Columbia's ecoprovinces are subdivided into 30 marine and terrestrial ecoregions. 27 of these ecoregions are further subdivided into 87 ecosections.

3 ecoprovinces are found along the South Coast area
  • Coast and Mounains
  • Northeast Pacific
  • Georgia Depression
