Red-breasted Nuthatch More often heard than seen, the nasal 'ank..ank..ank' call of this nuthatch is a familiar sound of the forest interior. Nuthatches belong to a special bird guild. These birds share a common lifestyle. They're insect eating bark gleaners. Nuthatches specialize in working the trunks of trees from top to bottom. Their slightly upturned bill helps them probe under bark scales and into crevices. Field Guide Entry: Red-breasted Nuthatch |
